Talents Cup: 2nd Qualification Event

With the Schmerikon Regatta, the Talents Cup entered its second qualifying round this weekend. The big questions before the regatta: Who can challenge Seeclub Zürich, and how will the newly entered boats perform?

Already after the heats, it was clear: both Club Aviron Vevey and Seeclub Luzern are among the frontrunners for the overall victory. Neither of them competed in Lauerz, but they showed outstanding performances already in the heats on Saturday. The mixed crew from Vevey narrowly beat the second-ranked Basler Ruder-Club in their heat – by just 0.04 seconds. Seeclub Luzern managed to beat the previously dominant Seeclub Zürich by 0.11 seconds.

Would Luzern hold their ground in Sunday’s final? They got off to a fast start and led the race by up to one boat length. Behind them, it was Vevey and Basler Ruder-Club fighting for positions 3 and 4. In the final sprint, Seeclub Zürich managed to pull ahead and win – by just 13 hundredths of a second. It remained exciting right to the last stroke: around five seconds behind Luzern, the Basel crew crossed the finish line as third.

Even in the second of three qualifying rounds, the Talents Cup offered tight and thrilling races. Currently, three teams are tied for 7th place. And with just a single strong performance, the two newly entered crews have reshaped the standings.
