The 2027 World Rowing Championships have been awarded to Lucerne after a decisive vote by international rowing federations. The joint bid by LUCERNE REGATTA and SWISS ROWING successfully defeated competition from Varèse (Italy), Seville (Spain), and Bled (Slovenia). Mario Gyr, President of the LUCERNE REGATTA Association, attributed the win to a meticulously planned campaign. After 1962, 1974, 1982, and most recently 2001, this will be the fifth World Rowing Championship held in Lucerne. “This championship on Lucerne’s Rotsee is a tremendous opportunity for rowing in Switzerland,” said Neville Tanzer, President of SWISS ROWING, expressing his great delight.

The Swiss rowing community has rallied behind the championship, with strong support from local and national authorities. Lucerne Tourism, LUCERNE HOTELS, and the Swiss Army have helped secure accommodations, including affordable options. The event aligns with Lucerne’s sports promotion strategy, and will be the first rowing world championships in Lucerne that include para-rowing. Both the city and the canton of Lucerne have committed to supporting the event with CHF 900’000.

Andreas Bucher, the outgoing President of the LUCERNE REGATTA Association, is also very pleased. The developments of recent years have brought forth a dynamic, young team. “Under the leadership of Mario Gyr, a motivated team is ready to take on the challenge, together with Timon Wernas, the Managing Director of the LUCERNE REGATTA, to create a rowing festival in Lucerne like no other.”

The 7-day event on the iconic Rotsee will feature more than rowing. Plans include medal ceremonies, live music, and public events in Lucerne’s city center to expand its reach and minimize environmental impact at the Rotsee. Over 1,300 athletes from 70 nations and 40,000 spectators are expected, making it a pivotal moment for Swiss rowing ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
