Introducing the Talents Cup

The national regatta season kicks into high gear this weekend on Lake Lauerz – and brings with it a promising premiere: the Talents Cup will be held for the very first time. This new format, initiated by the LUCERNE REGATTA and SWISS ROWING, is aimed at U17 rowing talents competing in the mixed quadruple sculls.

At three national regattas – in Lauerz, Schmerikon, and Cham – mixed quadruple sculls crews (two junior girls and two junior boys) will collect points for their club. The top six clubs will qualify for the grand final on June 28, 2025, on the Rotsee, held as part of the LUCERNE REGATTA (World Rowing Cup).

“I look forward to the day when these young talents return to compete at the LUCERNE REGATTA – this time against the world’s best,” says Olympic champion Mario Gyr, President of the LUCERNE REGATTA. Anne-Marie Howald from SWISS ROWING also praises the project as an ideal development platform – especially with the 2027 World Championships in Lucerne on the horizon.

Mixed formats are on trend, and the Talents Cup fits perfectly into this development. This year’s LUCERNE REGATTA will for the first time feature mixed eights, and at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai this fall, two mixed boat classes will be included in the program.

All entry fees are covered by the Talents Cup organization, and the CHF 5,000 prize money will go entirely towards youth development within the winning clubs. The project is funded by private donors and sponsors – a strong signal for the future of Swiss rowing.
